What ICA allows
- Chinese name: optional. ICA also lists Jawi and Tamil names. The characters must be found in a recognised dictionary.
- Hanyu Pinyin name: optional, and only together with the Chinese characters. It appears in brackets after the name, for example "Isaac Tan (Chen Xiao Ming)" with 陈小明.
- Passport: if the pinyin is on the birth certificate, it is also on the passport.
Decide before you register
- Chinese name or not? If yes, the characters become part of the official record. Check each one in a dictionary.
- Pinyin or not? It gives the official Mandarin reading of the Chinese name.
- Which English spelling? The surname can use a dialect spelling such as Tan, Lim or Goh, while the pinyin in brackets gives the Mandarin reading. See how to spell a Chinese name in English.
- Simplified or traditional characters? Choose the form you want.
Timing: one year
ICA says you can apply online to change the child's name after registration, but only before the child turns one. A fee applies. Settle the characters, pinyin and spelling before the birth.
